Throat slashed in Kiwi holiday glassing

A 19-year-old New Zealander, Danielle Armstrong, has made a brief appearance in a Gold Coast court after allegedly "glassing" her former friend, another 19-year-old New Zealand woman.
The ABC reported Armstrong appeared in Southport Magistrates Court on a charge of grievous bodily harm, but a magistrate stood down the case so her lawyer could speak with the arresting officer about the extent of injuries.
The victim was reported to have had her throat slashed, with blood gushing from a cut artery.
Police were called to a Surfers Paradise apartment complex on Surfers Paradise Boulevard about 9.20pm following a fight between the two former friends, the Brisbane Times reported.
They were on holiday from New Zealand with their families when the row erupted and one was struck in the face and neck with a wine glass.
Gold Coast police Superintendent Jim Keogh said the badly injured woman was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.
"They were quite severe," he said of her injuries, including deep lacerations to her face and neck.
"An artery had been severed."
The incident is the latest in a string of glassings that have fuelled calls for action against alcohol-related violence.
The Queensland Government has moved to ban glasses in dozens of high-risk venues and an inquiry is looking into whether the switch to plastic or tempered glass should be mandated in licensed premises across the state.
But Mr Keogh suggested the New Zealanders' incident was different to other examples of alleged glassing attacks that had been making headlines.
"This certainly isn't anything to do with licensed premises and the glass was obviously a weapon of convenience," he said.
