LATEST: Movement of horses in NSW and Queensland will likely remain banned for at least two more weeks, federal Agriculture Minister Peter McGauran says.
Mr McGauran today said the measure to prevent the spread of the equine influenza outbreak should be lifted on Friday in other states, allowing racing to go ahead on Saturday in Melbourne and elsewhere.
The NSW and Queensland ban is due to run out next Monday, but the minister said it was bound to be extended.
"Sadly, for NSW and Queensland it will continue at least, I would think, for a fortnight, but it's being reassessed every week," he told Southern Cross Broadcasting.
"So until the 3rd of September, NSW and Queensland people will have to stay still.
"The outbreak is bleak for NSW because there have many confirmed cases of influenza, Queensland likewise."
