Electrician Jose Sandoval Opazo, 66, was killed while working on an elevator on the Carnival Ecstasy.

What was meant to be a memorable Christmas cruise turned out ghastly for a Florida family.

They were shocked by the scene of a terrible death on a Carnival Cruise Line ship.

Last Sunday, electrician Jose Sandoval Opazo, 66, was killed while working on an elevator on the Carnival Ecstasy, according to the Miami-Dade Police Department.

"Somebody was inside or behind that wall when the elevator came down," cruise passenger Matt Davis told WFTX. "I don't know what happened, but something terrifying happened."

"To look and see the elevator with just blood coming down like a sheet, and not stopping ... it was a real life scene of The Shining."

Davis recorded video of the elevator doors trying to close, according to CNN.

"The company extends its heartfelt sympathy to the family and loved ones of our team member," a Carnival spokesperson said in a statement.

The company is investigating the cause of the accident, and providing support to anyone affected.
