It was a case of moggie to the rescue, when a cat rushed to protect a small boy from an attacking dog.

The cat, Tara, sprang into action when four-year-old Jeremy Triantafilo was suddenly bitten on the leg and dragged off his tricycle by the dog.

The scene was captured by surveillance cameras on the California property.

Posted on Youtube, it shows Tara charging the dog, chasing it off the driveway, and then returning to check on little Jeremy as he lies on the ground.

Erika Triantafilo, Jeremy's mother, appeared on the scene at the same time after hearing her son's screams.

She told 23ABC the boy needed a few stitches, but was doing fine.

It could have been much worse, she said.

Jeremy, who has mild autism, had just returned home from school before the attack.

"Tara is my hero," he said.

Tara joined the family in 2008, the family said.

The dog belonged to a neighbour and was now under observation at a local animal control centre.
