A man is seriously injured after the elevator he was in sped uncontrollably and then crashed.

Footage posted on YouTube reportedly shows Jose Vergara Acevedo entering a lift on the first floor of a building in Providencia, part of the greater Santiago area of Chile.

Before the elevator doors even close the elevator starts rising quickly. The doors do shut but then reopen as the 31-year-old passenger frantically pushes buttons on the control panel.

The elevator rose 30 storeys in 15 seconds, Fox 8 television said in a report put together from Spanish language media sources.

It is estimated the lift reached speeds of 80kmh.

After reaching the 31st floor, the elevator crashed into the building's roof, leaving Acevedo with head and leg injuries.

The building, at Bustamante Community Park, was finished just eight months ago.
