Police say one priest was shot and killed and another was wounded in an attack at a Catholic church in the US.

Phoenix police Sergeant Steve Martos says officers received a call about a burglary at the Mother of Mercy Mission on Wednesday night (local time). He says responding officers found two priests badly injured.

Martos says one priest had been shot and died at the hospital. He says the other priest is hospitalised in critical condition with unspecified injuries. It's not clear if he had been shot.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix has identified the slain priest as the Reverend Kenneth Walker and the injured priest as the Reverend Joseph Terra.

Martos says no arrests have been made.
