A 3.6 metre pet Burmese python broke out of an aquarium and strangled a two-year-old girl in the bedroom of her Florida home.
Shaunnia Hare was already dead when paramedics arrived at the home, Lt Bobby Caruthers of the Sumter County Sheriff's Office said.
Charles Jason Darnell, the snake's owner and the boyfriend of Shaunnia's mother, discovered the snake missing from its aquarium on Wednesday and went to the girl's room where he found it on the girl who had bite marks on her head.
Darnell, 32, stabbed the snake until he was able to pry the child away.
Darnell did not have a permit for the snake, which would be a second-degree misdemeanour, said Joy Hill, a spokeswoman with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
He has not been charged, but Caruthers said investigators were looking into whether there was child neglect or if any other laws were broken.
The Humane Society of the United States said, including Wednesday's death, at least 12 people have been killed in the US by pet pythons since 1980, including five children.
Burmese pythons are not native to Florida, but they easily survive in the state and can reach a length of nearly 8m and weigh more than 90kg.
Some owners have freed pythons into the wild and a population of them has taken hold in the Everglades.
Scientists also speculate a bevy of Burmese pythons escaped in 1992 from pet shops battered by Hurricane Andrew and have been reproducing since.
"It's becoming more and more of a problem, perhaps no fault of the animal, more a fault of the human," said Jorge Pino, a state wildlife commission spokesman.
"People purchase these animals when they're small. When they grow, they either can't control them or release them."

I find it hard to understand how anyone would willingly put their children in harm's way. Yes, the snake was in an aquarium, but surely there was a chance that it could get out (which it obviously did).
As for the dog thing, I am on the fence. I grew up with Ridgebacks and they never attacked people. However, dogs can become aggressive for no apparent reason. Dogs are loyal and territorial and if you introduce a new person into the mix that dilutes the attention you pay to them, they can decide to remove the threat. Also, I have seen small children unwittingly hurting a dog and often, in defence, they will bite.
As for the python story, stupid, stupid people. That poor child.

I found a new home for my husky when i had my child as I didnt want to risk it after hearing about the huskys in australia. A dog comes from wolf, they were not put here just to be your loyal companion. Not saying you are irresponsible parent at all for having a dog, just saying its personal choice, and i choose the safest environement possible for my baby. Get over yourself.
Poor kid, stupid parents.
And I think having a rottweiler as a pet with kids is just as stupid and irresponsible.
Think of the child for a change, not yourself.

I own a rottweiller and I have a 10 year old son. I must be a irresponsible parent. Dogs instincts are not to see us as prey. A python would. That is the difference. Obviously not a dog person.
how crul to do that to a 2 year old
to #26 Even domesticated dogs can turn. Remember the pet huskys that attacked and killed the baby in aussie and how many stories do you hear of dogs turning on their owners children?? You are the ignorant one if you think humans can smother any instinct a dog has been born with. Its not all about neglect.
the 2 year old shoulda put up a better fight.

What a dumb thing to say, my son has a unusual name and I am not a dumb careless parent. Secondly pitballs are not in the same league as snakes, dogs are domesticated and can be trained. With a responsible dog owner and good breeding pitballs can be lovely dogs. Any dog can cause damage it depends how they are treated. Sadly alot of people who own pitballs mistreat them and the dogs get the bad reputation. Maybe you wanna live a bit, get a feel for this world and stop being so ignorant.
i struggle to see the difference between the snake killing the child or the pet pitbull. Either way, having an animal that can over power your child in the house is a dangerous and stupid thing.
Snakes were never meant to be in captivity they are untamable.

My son and my Rottweiler adore each other. I would be a irresponsible parent if I owned a dog (any dog) that did not like kids. You obviously dont know the breed. Any dog can turn and if they do its more than likely to be either cause they have been mistreated or they come from poor breeding. Responsible breeders will not breed dogs that show any signs of aggression, therefore it minimizes this trait being passed down. Do your research before you judge. With proper training a dog learns what is acceptable, a python you can not teach what is acceptable and what is not. And Jenny dogs have long since evolved since wolves. I would never put my son in asituation where he is unsafe, I know my dog and I can make that call not someone else who thinks because a few dogs have bitten that they all do.
