A small airplane was struck by three vehicles after it made an emergency landing on a California motorway.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the Piper PA-24 Comanche with two people on board was bound for Santa Barbara Airport on Sunday when the pilot told air traffic controllers he had run out of fuel.

He landed on the southbound side of US Highway 101, about one mile northeast of the airport.

California Highway Patrol Officer James Richards says three cars were unable to avoid the plane and crashed into it. He says the occupants of the plane and the cars were not injured.

Richards says traffic briefly backed up for miles while crews shut down the motorway to remove the plane.

But, what happened to the dog?

I'm sure ther ewill be an investigation and if the pilot did exceed his required reserves apprppriate action will follow.

However "running out of fuel" can actually mean any number of things - engine stops...pilots sweats .... that prop in front is there to keep him cool....& he is probably very happy to just be alive!

It all depends on if he successully landed the plane, and was then hit by cars, then maybe it's a forced landing. If he hit a barrier, or hit a car whilst still rolling, then it's a crash! If you can't walk away from a fully intact plane, it's surely got to be a crash. Who really cares about the terminology. Ran out of petrol ,landed on highway, plane got broke.

A forced landing is NOT a crashed plane - a forced landing is a standard procedure that if performed correctly will result in little or no damage to the aircraft.

But all the same, this pilot needs to be investigated and should receive a fine or reduction of the privaleges on his license - what happened to the legally required half hour fuel reserve??
