Navy ship remembers 9/11
The new Navy assault ship USS New York, built with World Trade Centre steel, arrived in its namesake city to a rifle volley salute near the site of the 2001 terrorist attack.
Emergency crews, families of September 11 victims and the public gathered at a waterfront viewing area, where they could see the crew standing at attention along the deck of the battleship gray vessel.
The big ship paused. Then the shots were fired, with a cracking sound, in three bursts.
The bow of the US$1 billion (NZ$1.4bn) ship, built in Louisiana, contains about 7.5 tons of steel from the fallen towers.
"It's a transformation ... from something really twisted and ugly," said Rosaleen Tallon, who lost her firefighter brother, Sean, on 9/11. "I'm proud that our military is using that steel."
Tallon said her brother, who was a Marine, would have been proud.
JoAnn Atlas, of Howells, New York, who lost her husband, fire Lt Gregg Atlas, draped a flag-themed banner along the fence. The names of emergency workers who died were written on the red stripes.
"We have to remember. It's a way to honour them," she said.
Members of the public included Nancy DiGiacomo, who came from Huntington, New York, with her husband, nine-year-old son, mother and sister.
"I just thought it was important to see the transformation of the tragedy's wreckage," said DiGiacomo. "From that, something else can come of it."
Lt Cmdr Colette Murphy, a Navy spokeswoman, said she was excited for those serving on board to see the city's "awe-inspiring" welcome.
At a short ceremony later at Pier 88, near the site of the aircraft carrier, the USS Intrepid, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the USS New York couldn't have a more fitting name, representing freedom, courage and resilience.
"This ship is actually a physical representation of that spirit with steel from the World Trade Centre built into its bow so every friend that sets foot on it and every foe that dares challenge it will feel its power and know that it is literally made from the heart and soul of the city that has sacrificed so much," the mayor said.
Of the 361 sailors serving aboard the ship, around 13 percent are from New York state, which is higher than would normally be the case, Murphy said. There were many requests from Navy personnel to serve on the ship, which will carry some 250 Marines.
After the ground zero stop, the ship - escorted by about two dozen tugboats and other vessels - headed up the Hudson River toward the George Washington Bridge. After a U-turn there, it headed south to Pier 88. An official commissioning ceremony is scheduled for Saturday.
The New York will remain in the city through Veterans Day and then head to Norfolk, Virginia, for about a year of crew training and exercises, Murphy said.
The ship is 208 metres long and can carry as many as 800 Marines. Its flight deck can handle helicopters and the MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft.
It was scheduled to be built before the terrorist attacks. About a year later, the announcement came that the ship would bear the name New York to honour the city, state, and those who died.
It's the latest in a line of Navy ships to bear that name. The others included a Spanish-American War-era cruiser, a battleship that served in World Wars I and II and a nuclear submarine retired from the fleet in 1997.
The ship is technically known as a San Antonio-class amphibious dock vessel. Four vessels in that class are in service, the USS San Antonio, USS New Orleans, USS Mesa Verde and USS Green Bay. Four others are being built. Of those, two also have been named in connection with the September 11 attacks.
The USS Arlington was named to honour the attack on the Pentagon. The USS Somerset was named after the county in Pennsylvania where United Airlines flight 93 crashed.

Lee #21, Seth #22, John S #26, There is nothing wrong with wanting the FACTS, actually, in the absense of FACTS all you have is THEORY (& faith I suppose). Its easy eliminate one of those by saying I have no faith in what the Bush government gave as an explanation. We all share that view I think. So, all that is left is THEORY. Theory does not satisfy me. I felt terrorised all the way over here in NZ. It was a truly horrific event, the worst act of war in my lifetime, the U.S. Govt is so wealthy & powerful, yet, they can't seem to find one man to put on trial dispite invading at least two countries! You guys need to seriously open your eyes. Plane hits building, building falls down vertically (not sideways), this repeats, THEN for no apparent reason WTC 7 collapses. A couple of thousand people die, Govt puts focus on Iraq, then Afganistan, more people die, nearly 10 years passes, WE STILL HAVE NO UNILATERALLY ACCEPTED EXPLANATION BASED ON FACTS!! What does it take for you to say enough is enough???
@ Sarkis Zim #24 - i was in ny in august. trust me, there are already plenty of bridges, buildings and memorials.
@Rangi #19
LOL. Logic isn't a strong suit of yours, is it?
There are plenty of perfectly valid - albeit mundane - explanations for the physical events that occurred in New York, and at the Pentagon. That you aren't aware of them does not make them any less real.
Refutations of the various madcap conspiracy theories are pretty easy to find. This is as good a place to start as any: http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/military_law/1227842.html It's almost 5 years old now, and it wouldn't surprise me if some of the detailed explanations have changed a bit since then, but it's pretty good and thorough.
The Twin Towers and Building 7 were most likely destroyed via explosive controlled demolition, according to architect Richard Gage. Gage is speaking at Te Papa on the 21st of November (this month) so be there if you can and you'll get to see his presentation :)
I totally agree with PaulT. I take it that he was the guy on TV1 news on the 11th of September this year?
Google "architects and engineers for 9/11 truth". They have over 900 qualified professionals now, who want an independent investigation.
A naval craft is okay (for example, if it's not to fire nuclear missiles at innocent children and friendly democratic nations like NZ or UK). But it is not what I would chosen to use the steel for. They could've used the steel to construct things like bridges, memorials or buildings especially to directly help the people of New York, victims and rescuer families.
@ J.Andal #12 I suggest you find out what a battleship actually is before you correct others on the definition, since going by the evidence of your post you don't seem to know. 'New York' is not a battleship. It is a warship. Big difference.
@Rangi, two 747's full of jet fuel flew into the twin towers. They fell over. Thats it.
Theres no conspiracy theory, you just need to get out into the real world.

You mean to tell me that the force of two 110 storey buildings collapsing would not be enough to cause considerable structural damage to neighbouring buildings which then may cause them to collapse?
yep, Michael Moore is definitely conclusive proof. and somehow the vatican was involved as well.

@ Rangi and PaulT. Next thing you'll be telling us 'Loose Change' was a documentary....
Rangi when you say "People who disagree with me, will NEVER be able to prove me wrong" you are devaluing your opinion and your credibility. You are essentially saying it is impossible to rationally argue with you, or present any evidence that contradicts your opinion. The flipside of your statement is that you don't have to prove any of your allegations, since you can argue that anything presented to counter them is planted disinformation.
