A bridge in southern Brazil has given way to floodwaters while 20 people were on it.

Civil defence authorities in the southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul say at least 12 people are missing after a bridge over the River Jacui near the town of Agudo was swept away.

Flooding and mudslides in southeastern Brazil have killed more than 80 people in recent days, including at least 50 who died in a New Year's Day mudslide in the resort city of Angra dos Reis.

In Rio Grande do Sul, flooding from heavy rains has forced 1000 people from their homes, and officials have closed more than a dozen highways because of high waters.
