A father and daughter get stuck in a rip off Nantucket Island in the US and their whole ordeal is caught on camera.

A teenager filming herself swimming with a selfie stick has inadvertently managed to make a video showing the terror of being caught in a rip.

Erynn Johns, 16, was swimming with her parents off Nantucket Island in the US when they started to feel a strong current.

"It was sucking me out so hard. I was trying everything I had to swim and it kept sucking us back out," she told local media.

Erynn Johns struggles to stay above water, but never lets go of the selfie stick.

Erynn and her dad Derrick were swept away from the shore

"At that point, I was totally lost. I just turned around and we were so far from the shore. ... He just told me I needed to swim," Erynn said.

"I used all my energy and I could not swim against that current."

The whole ordeal was caught on her underwater camera attached to the selfie stick.

Derrick was eventually able to grab the stick to pull her above the water, before going under twice himself. He told CBS his oxygen levels were so low, lifeguards said he only had another 20 seconds.

Two lifeguards and another man pulled the family to shore.
