A person has reportedly died after being shot in a dormitory at a United States university.

CNN reported that Coastal Carolina University still plans to hold classes Wednesday, and will make counselors available after the death of Anthony Darnell Liddell, 19.

Coastal Carolina University spokeswoman Martha Hunn said dispatchers received a call at about 7.20pm local time regarding a shooting at University Place, which is adjacent to South Carolina Highway 544.

Hunn said the victim was transported to a local hospital.

Police are still searching for the shooter.
According to the school's website, University Place houses almost 2000 students.

Coastal Carolina University has an enrollment of slightly more than 9000 students. Its website says there are 72 buildings on campus covering 630 acres.

The school, founded in 1954, is in Conway, 24km northwest of Myrtle Beach.
