A US man who purchased an abandoned storage locker at auction got more than he bargained for, after he opened it to discover two freezers full of frozen cats.

Police in Queens, New York, found dozens of dead felines in the freezers – including one skinned cat, reported WABC.

The cats were stacked on top of each other, some on aluminium trays, and some wrapped in plastic bags.

The frozen bodies were stuck together to a degree that prevented police from determining the exact number of animals, believed to be upwards of 40.

Detectives at the grisly scene were greeted with a "smell of death" so overpowering, they had to shower and have a change of clothes, reported NY Daily News.

Apart from the two freezers, assorted items such as clothes, sewing machines and papers were also found.

Before being put up for auction, the storage unit is understood to have been used by an elderly Brooklyn woman who rented it on a month-to-month basis for two years.

She stopped paying for it in July 2016, reported NY Daily News.

The locker was then put up for auction by American Self Storage in Long Island city.

Officials are waiting for the cats to thaw out to conduct a necropsy on the bodies, before they can determine if there will be charges.
