A mother is to be charged with second degree murder after her five-year-old daughter shot herself in the head.

Police claim Laderika Smith, 28, from New Orleans, had left the girl at home by herself while she went to the shops.

When she came home she found her girl in a bedroom, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

The girl was taken to hospital but died from her injuries.

The New Orleans Police Department said the gun belonged to Ms Smith and that girl had somehow managed to find it.

"A preliminary investigation indicates the child was home alone and had somehow come into contact with a .38 revolver and accidentally shot herself in the head," police said in a statement.

Associated Press reported that Ms Smith would be charged with second-degree murder, adding that police said her negligence resulted in the death of the girl.

AP also reported that Ms Smith had locked her daughter inside the house.
