Lawyer Steve Farese's comments have been labelled "absolutely despicable".

A defence lawyer is being criticised for telling a jury in the US that women were "especially good" at lying "because they're the weaker sex".

The Memphis Commercial Appeal reports lawyer Steve Farese made the comments during closing arguments in Tennessee during the trial of Mark Giannini, a wealthy businessman accused of raping a woman who came to his house for a job interview.

"People can be very good at lying. Women can be especially good at it because they're the weaker sex and we ... and we want to protect them and not have anybody take advantage of them at least I do," he said.

Farese maintains that the sex was consensual and has questioned the woman's credibility.

Memphis Area Women's Council executive director Deborah Clubb calls Farese's comments "absolutely despicable".

Farese told the newspaper his job was "not to care if anybody gets offended" and "smart people will see it for what it is".
