US police have discovered a man's murder plot after he accidentally rang his intended victim.

Larry Barnett was charged with conspiracy to commit murder after he inadvertently revealed his plans to his alleged target, a former employee, according to local news reports.

The victim told police he got a call from Barnett but quickly realised his number had been accidentally dialed - most likely from Barnett sitting on his phone.

He listened in as Barnett reportedly spent the next hour and a half plotting the murder and giving someone directions to his house.

He overheard Barnett say: "I don't care if you have to burn his house to the ground with him in it. I don't care what you have to do, make it look like an accident."

When police arrived at the man's house, they found it had been broken in to and the gas stove tampered with.
