One lucky pit bull pup has survived more than a week buried in a tornado ravaged apartment building.

Six-month-old Dexter has been reunited with his owner, Jacob Montgomery, after spending nine days trapped in an Illinois apartment block that was left in ruins after the last round of deadly storms to his the US Midwest.

The complex was levelled, with Dexter inside, on November 17.

Montgomery, a military policeman with the American National Guard, posted photos online hoping someone might find his dog.

After nine days he was convinced he'd lost his beloved pooch forever until he received a Facebook message from a neighbour.

"He said 'I've got your dog right here'," Montgomery said.

Montgomery's neighbour had been searching for his cat with an animal rescue organisation, when they came across Dexter partly buried in rubble.

They coaxed the puppy out of the rubble with hot dogs.

"The vet said he has no real injuries - just a few scrapes and cuts. He was malnourished, but he's going to be fine," Montgomery said.

The lucky escape was celebrated on Facebook by the  group Lost Dogs Illinois.
