Leap of faith ends with woman wedged

A woman was wedged between two buildings after a rooftop leap went wrong.

The 28-year-old California woman was jumping between a supermarket and a strip mall when she slid down the roof of one building and got trapped, KTLA.com reported.

She fell about eight metres, pinned in a gap just about 45 centimetres wide, KTLA said.

She was originally trapped 1.5m off the ground, but was able to shimmy her way down, Orange County Fire Authority spokesman Steve Concialdi told the station. But she couldn't escape because columns blocked her way.

About 30 firefighters had to rescue the woman, including members of a special Urban Search and Rescue team that coincidentally had just been training for rescues in tight spaces. After about an hour a rescuer was lowered down and tied a harness to the woman, who was then lifted out.

She suffered scrapes to her arms and legs and was taken to hospital.

It's not clear why the woman was jumping between the buildings.
