A postal error has delivered a US woman a Christmas present from President Barack Obama and the first family.

Alane Ecklund Church, from Illinois, thought she had received a delayed, re-wrapped gift from her brother-in-law, but instead she found a photo album from the Obamas.

The gift included a hand-written label to "Mama Kaye + Papa Wellington" from "Barack, Michelle + the girls."

It appears the gift was intended for Sasha and Malia Obama's godmother, Eleanor "Mama Kaye" Wilson but an error made by the Post Office saw the gift end up in the hands of a total stranger.

Church told The Today Show she didn't share the contents of the family photo book online (outside of a photo of the gift's note).

"It's very special. Private moments of their year of 2013 together," Church said. "We're sort of wanting to keep it private for Mama Kaye."

Church says she's sending Mama Kaye's rightful gift to her post-haste.
