A young woman has fallen to her death while posing for a clifftop photo in the US.

Anna Bachman was having her photo taken when she misstepped and fell to her death from a cliff in San Diego, California.

The 25-year-old University of Illinois student was on holiday with her sister.

As her sister took her picture, Bachman lost her balance and fell backwards onto rocks below, according to San Diego police.

She fell between 12 and 15 metres and was killed instantly, police said.

A witness said two nurses and a "couple of surfers that were in the water" went to the woman's aid, the New York Daily News reported.

Despite resuscitative efforts, her death was confirmed when paramedics arrived at the scene.

Police described the death as an accident and said alcohol was not believed to have been involved.
