A woman and eight of her children, aged four to 15, have died after a fire in their rural home in the US state of Kentucky.

The fire broke out early on Thursday (overnight, NZT) and tore through the wooden house.

Only two people, the father and an 11-year-old child escaped. They both suffered serious burns.

''When first responders arrived the residence was totally  engulfed in flame,'' Kentucky State Trooper Stu Recke told WDRB  news.

''At the present time, it does not look to be suspicious so foul  play is not suspected at all,'' he said.

Five bodies had been pulled from the charred ruins and fire crews were hunting for the remaining four, Recke said.
