After visiting Las Vegas, the shooting feels close to home

Looking at photos of the aftermath, I can't believe we were in the same place just weeks ago.

I stayed at the Mandalay Bay Hotel just six weeks ago, on the 28th floor.

I am a Kiwi currently living and working in the USA, and I had planned a surprise trip for my dad, who was visiting Canada.

I flew him into McCarran Airport and we enjoyed the city for the weekend, visiting the Grand Canyon, Valley of Fire state park and of course enjoying the resort.

I woke up the other morning to my father's email telling me about the mass shooting that had taken place from the 32nd floor of the hotel.

I still can't believe the shooter was in a room only floors above where my dad and I were staying not too long ago.

As I scroll through my photos of our trip, many of them taken in the exact same place where the shooting took place, it hits close to home. It's hard to see the contrast of what the area looked like on a bright sunny day a month or so ago, to the devastation this week.
