The accused gunman in last year's bloody siege of Mumbai has retracted his confession, saying the police tortured him into admitting to his role in the attacks.

Mohammed Ajmal Kasab has told the special court trying him that he came to Mumbai as a tourist and was arrested 20 days before the siege that left 166 people dead. On the day the attacks began, he says police took him from his cell and shot him to make him look like he was a gunman.

He says he'd been initially arrested because he was wandering around the city late at night looking for a place to stay.

Kasab, who earlier confessed to spraying gunfire into the crowds at Mumbai's main train station during the attack, could face the death penalty if he is convicted.
