Police say at least 10 people have been killed and dozens more injured when a crowded passenger bus collided with a truck on Indonesia's main Java island.

Police Capt. Bagus Prasetya says the accident occurred Wednesday in the Central Java district of Batang when the bus tried to pass another vehicle and collided head-on with the truck, which was coming from the opposite direction.

He says the bus driver and nine passengers were killed and at least 34 others were injured, including 14 seriously.

Road accidents are common in Indonesia, a vast nation of 235 million people with crowded and poorly maintained highways.
