A Chinese man has been arrested after admitting his claims about capturing and killing an alien was a hoax.

Li Kai was attrested fter his story went viral on Chinese social media and he was this week sentenced to to five days in detention for creating false reports and disturbing public order

"The alien [Li] claimed to have killed was made of wire, glue, and white pigment", Binzhou police chief Zhou Xiaofei said in a statement.

Li had originally claimed to have caught and killed the alien in an electrified wire trap he used to catch small game on the banks of the Yellow River.

He claimed to have encountered several aliens back in March but had waited until last week to post his story, complete with photos of the "corpse" stored in a freezer.

Global Times reported the hoax was part of a publicity stunt for a seafood company which "sells artificial sea cucumbers".
