North Korean singer Hyon Song-wol, long thought to be an ex-lover of the reclusive state's leader Kim Jong-un has been executed by a firing squad, a South Korean newspaper reports.

The Chosun Ilbo said Hyon was one of a group of performers executed on August 20 for violating the country's laws against pornography.

It has been alleged Hyon, a singer in North Korea's famed Unhasu Orchestra, was one of 12 members of the orchestra and Wangjaesan Light Music Band who had filmed themselves having sex and then distributed the tapes.

Reports have indicated some of the group may have also been in possession of bibles - a political crime in the communist state.

Although little was ever confirmed, it is thought Kim and Hyon met about 10 years ago but Kim's father, the late Kim Jong-il, disapproved of the relationship and ordered it to end.

File footage from North Korea's state-run television KRT showed a woman who is believed to be Hyon appearing at a concert in July last year.

She was best known for her 2005 pop hit Excellent Horse-Like Lady.

An unnamed source told Chosun Ilbo the families of Hyon and the other people in the alleged sex video were taken to a labour camp.

The report, which cites an anonymous source in China, said the group was arrested on August 17 after the clip apparently found its way across the border to China.

Their families were said to have been forced to watch the execution, which took place three days later, and were then sent to the country's notorious prison camps.
