Japan earthquake

Mental scars run deep

CHRIS MEYERS - Reuters

It is nearly a year since a massive 9.0 earthquake and tsunami hit Japan but for around 90,000 residents their homes around the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant remain off limits.

Quakes prompt record claims

Natural disasters, led by catastrophic earthquakes in Japan and New Zealand, cost the world a record NZ$483b in 2011.

Long nuclear clean up

Decommissioning the tsunami-wrecked Fukushima nuclear power plant is set to take 30-40 years with the clean up possibly costing up to NZ$66 billion.

Fukushima declared stable

Japan has announced that the Fukushima plant is no longer leaking substantial amounts of radiation.
