A man will face court after another man was stabbed to death in front of shoppers in a horrific scene in a major western Sydney shopping centre.

The 35-year-old man has been charged with murder over the death of a 40-year-old man inside the Westfield mall in Parramatta yesterday morning.

It is believed an argument over a girlfriend triggered the killing.

Horrified onlookers watched as the man allegedly repeatedly stabbed the other man to death, leaving the knife lodged in the victim's chest
.

The man was charged after being questioned by police for more than 12 hours.

Refused bail, he is to appear at Parramatta Local Court today.
