All flights in and out of Brisbane airport were suspended for an hour because of a "security matter" that reportedly involved a woman driving her car onto a runway.

The airport tweeted at 10.36pm (12.36am NZ Time) that all flights had been halted, and later advised passengers to check with their airlines for schedule changes.

Another Twitter update read: "If flying out tonight please be aware flights are currently being held due to a security matter. Passengers should expect delays."

The ABC has reported that a woman drove a car through a fence and onto a runway, preventing planes from landing.

The woman is reportedly being treated by paramedics and the vehicle has been removed from the tarmac.

Brisbane Airport announced that flights had resumed via Twitter at 11.20pm (1.20am NZT).
