Gable Tostee has been charged with the murder of Lower Hutt woman Warriena Wright in Surfers Paradise.

Queensland police charged Tostee, 28, with murder at 2.02pm today (local time) after arresting him shortly before noon for questioning.

He is scheduled to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court tomorrow.

Tostee was taken into custody shortly before noon (local time) today following 26-year-old Wright's death a week ago.

Wright, who went by the name Rrie, died a week ago after falling from Tostee's 14th-floor balcony at the Avalon Apartments in Surfers Paradise.

She was in Australia for a fortnight to catch up with friends and attend a wedding.

It is understood to have met Tostee through popular smartphone dating app Tinder.

She worked at a Kiwibank call centre and flatted with her sister Reza, who has travelled to the Gold Coast to bring her sister home.

Wright was an aspiring photographer and passionate campaigner for animal rights, regularly posting articles online to raise awareness.

She had written to Parliament in the past requesting harsher penalties for animal abusers.

She grew up attending Porirua's Seventh-day Adventist Church, where her mother, Beth, is a deacon.
