Schoolgirl's solo sail 'irresponsible'

Family groups in Australia have questioned the safety of a planned solo trip around the world by a 16-year-old Sunshine Coast sailor.
Jessica Watson, now 15, announced plans yesterday to circumnavigate the globe by herself in an attempt to become the youngest person ever to sail solo non-stop around the world.
Miss Watson has the support of her parents, including dad Roger, who quit his job to help her prepare.
She will be 16 when she sets sail in September.
But John Morrissey, of the Australian Family Association, said the trip was too risky.
"I'm a secondary teacher and I've been teaching 15 year-old girls for 42 years and I'd be amazed if any of them could cope with something like that," Mr Morrissey said.
"I don't know how closely they are shadowed...but on long-distance epic journeys like that there is a lot of isolation and it is normally people of 50 or 60 who have the sort of maturity needed to deal with it.
"I would definitely encourage her parents to reconsider."
Bill Muehlenberg, secretary of the Family Council of Victoria, said the trip was "irresponsible".
"It sounds fairly reckless indeed given that even old experienced sailors can get into a lot of strife," Mr Muehlenberg told ABC radio.
"It is a hugely risky venture. Sure give her high marks for confidence and wanting to do something that nobody had done before but still I think it sounds fairly irresponsible to allow this kind of thing to happen certainly at this young age."
The trip will cover about 40,000 kilometres and is expected to take Miss Watson seven to eight months.
Miss Watson's mother Julie said the Buderim schoolgirl had been inspired by Kay Cottee - the first woman to sail solo unassisted around the world - and Australian teen adventurer Jesse Martin, the youngest person so far to achieve the feat. He turned 18 on his trip.
"If something's going to happen, Jessica can do it," Roger Watson said yesterday.
"Jessica says she wants to inspire other young women."
Her 10-metre yacht, the YoungestRound, was donated by adventurer Don McIntyre.

Go Jessica! You know yourself better than sad old strangers. Can't wait to hear of your success ! But remmber - You will need a lot off Good Luck...
Good on her and good on her parents! Seems to me they know what they are getting themselves into.
Things are only dangerous if you go into it unaware of the perils, I'm sure they are well aware of the dangers and are preparing her for them as part of the suport process.
The people like Tammy who want to live life in their safe little box are entitled to it, they should not inflict their fears onto a courageous young woman who is out to live life, not merely exist.
You get my vote girly, all power to you :)
Tammy, nice rant but you obviously don't know recent history. It's only been in recent decades that 15 year olds and younger haven't been expected to earn their keep, and it's already been done by someone else her age. What makes the kids of today any less capable of doing that which the kids of the past used to? My money is on people like yourself who want the world covered in foam so no one loses an eye, people who protect their kids from the realities of life.
If you treat kids like precious little snowflakes, they will expect that for the rest of their lives.
Without knowing Jessica, the Watson family or Jessica's sailing experience, how can anybody judge her capabilities?
It seems to me that parents of a fifteen year old would have a better understanding of her capability than people who have never met her.
Irresponsible? Possibly. Dangerous? Definitely. Gutsy? Without a doubt!
She's Shark Bait !! Sad but true
Go Jessie girl :) Show these PC moron's and nervous nellies that survival of the fittest does count!!
Can't wait to hear of your success - sending lots of positive thoughts your way :)
Ana, clearly you don't keep up with the news. These pirates are attacking all the time with virtual impunity, and these are only the stories that actually are reported..
Some people have no sense of adventure these days. Perhaps they should step out of their offices and do sometihng o real value instead of trying to ruin peoples dreams.
What next, an 8 year old in a bath tub rowing up the Amazon !!
Give it a go if you feel you must but .......
as long as she and her parents sign documentation that states when she gets into strife, that no one is to rescue her.
Don't put the lives of rational thinking adults at risk, these being the very ones that will have to come to her aid if it goes wrong.
