Desmond Moran, the latest victim of Melbourne's gangland war, has been laid to rest in a style in keeping with the way he led his life.

Mr Moran was farewelled at an intensely private funeral attended by around 300 friends, associates and other figures well known to police.

Among the mourners was underworld figure Mick Gatto, who arrived fashionably late for the 11am service at the Roselyn Court Homestead in Essendon, better known as a wedding reception venue.

A number of prominent racing identities also paid their respects to Mr Moran, who had worked and spent a lot of his time at Flemington racecourse.

Representatives of Australia's leading racing stables, including those of Bart Cummings and David Hayes were among mourners at the service, which was wrapped in heavy security.

While the service was held outdoors on a lawn, it was conducted by a Catholic priest.

Mr Moran, who was murdered in nearby Ascot Vale last week, is the last male member of the family decimated by Melbourne's gangland wars.

His brother Lewis and nephews Jason and Mark were all killed in a series of gangland murders that have claimed at least 25 victims.

Media were barred from the funeral service and uniformed police stood watch outside.

Geoffrey Armour, 43, has been charged with Moran's murder while Moran's sister-in-law Judy Moran and Armour's girlfriend Suzanne Kane have been remanded in custody, each charged with being an accessary after the fact.
