A woman has been run over by a council four-wheel drive while sunbathing on a Gold Coast beach.

The woman, believed to be in her 40s, was sunbathing at Surfers Paradise when a Gold Coast City Council maintenance vehicle ran over her.

The council vehicle was maintaining the beach for the Coolangatta Gold lifesaving endurance event when it hit the woman near the Q1 building on Trickett Street at about 1.10pm on Thursday.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Community Safety said the woman was taken to the Gold Coast Hospital with a fractured wrist.

Gold Coast City Council's acting director of engineering Chris Stephens said staff were shaken.

"Our staff members involved are naturally shaken and have co-operated fully with police," Mr Stephens said.

"Council has now issued an urgent safety alert suspending the use of motor vehicles for maintenance activities on all Gold Coast beaches until an investigation has been completed and preventative measures implemented to help prevent this from occurring in the future."

The incident is now being reviewed by the council and police.
