The medical team that successfully separated conjoined twins Krishna and Trishna have been honoured at Government House in Melbourne for the 32-hour surgery marathon.
The Victorian Premier, John Brumby, said the separation was a wonderful result. ''It has captured people's imagination, it has lifted people's spirits. It's a wonderful thing to be finishing the year with a story about human spirit, about inspiration and about the magnificent work of an extraordinarily dedicated and broad and committed team.''
He thanked the surgeons and nurses, saying there had been global interest in the progress of the twins and pride in the Royal Children's Hospital.
''We all hope and wish and pray for their continued success,'' he said.
The director of neurosurgery, Wirginia Maixner, who performed the brain surgery on the twins along with colleague Alison Wray, said a large team of people could take the credit for the twins' progress.
''It's an incredibly proud moment for me to stand here with all my colleagues and friends,'' she said.
She also thanked people for their well-wishes including schoolchildren who had sent cards from across the country.
Victoria's Governor, David de Kretser, also gave special thanks to the twins' guardian, Moira Kelly, who was not able to attend because she was at the hospital looking after them.
