Australian police are interviewing witnesses and reviewing closed circuit television footage as they investigate the death of a man during a brawl at a Sydney karaoke bar overnight.
Today they appealed for witnesses to come forward after the fight - allegedly involving up to six men - erupted in the foyer of Viva Karaoke on Clarence St about 1.30am.
Initial investigations suggest the 33-year-old man was struck with an unknown object before falling down a staircase.
The men allegedly involved fled the bar, leaving the man fatally injured in a stairwell.
He died at the scene. A post mortem examination is expected to be carried out tomorrow to establish the cause of death.
Detective Inspector Peter Houlahan, Sydney's City Central Crime Manager, said the man was found unconscious with a head laceration at the bottom of stairs and could not be revived.
About 30 people were in the bar at the time. Many left before police arrived.
"We'd really like to speak to those people to see if they can assist us in our inquiries,'' Detective Inspector Houlahan said.
The bar was cordoned off with police tape as homicide detectives and forensic investigators spent the morning at the scene.
Police are interviewing several of the victim's friends, and scrutinising CCTV footage from the bar and surrounding streets, as they piece together what happened.
