Two men involved in a fatal accident in Sydney in which a two-year-old girl died, tried to car jack another vehicle after the crash in a bid to avoid arrest, police said.

The two men had been involved in a lengthy police chase that began after they allegedly committed two armed robberies on Thursday night.

The pursuit ended when the white Chrysler Voyager the men were driving crashed into another car on the Hume Highway at Ingleburn just before 7pm, which was carrying a family of three.

A two-year-old girl strapped in a capsule in the back of the other car suffered critical injuries in the accident and was later pronounced dead on arrival at Liverpool Hospital.

Acting Commissioner Dave Owens said the two men tried to flee the scene after crashing into the family car.

"When they crashed into the motor vehicle they subsequently tried to get away by car jacking another vehicle," he said.

"When they weren't successful, then that's when one of the offenders was run over by a motorist and that's why they've ended up in hospital."

Police allege the man hit by the vehicle was the driver of the Chrysler.

"These people didn't want to get caught," said Mr Owens.

"These people were armed and determined. They didn't care about the people that were left behind in the vehicle when the crash occurred."

The acting Commissioner said two Highway Patrol Vehicles and a Pol-Air helicopter were in pursuit of the Chrysler before it crashed, but would not comment on the speeds at which the cars were travelling.

He defended the actions of the officers involved in the pursuit.

"Subject to the critical incident review, I believe my officers acted appropriately last night,' he said.

The two men in the Voyager were arrested at the crash scene and taken to Liverpool Hospital, where one of them, aged 26, was still being treated yesterday. The other man was released into police custody.

He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court.
