A woman's skull was fractured when she was hit by a golf ball that flew through the open window of the taxi in which she was a passenger.

The incident occurred as the taxi drove along Sanctuary Lakes Boulevard at Sanctuary Lakes, near Point Cook, in Melbourne's south-west, about 2am on Saturday .

The Sanctuary Lakes woman was taken to Werribee Hospital and was transferred to St Vincent's hospital for treatment.

She was released from hospital on Thursday.

It is not yet known from where the golf ball was hit and Australian detectives say they are still investigating.
