Two people are dead after a light plane crashed and caught fire in a paddock in northern NSW, police say.

The plane crashed just off the Bruxner Highway, South Gundurimbra, near Lismore Airport about 10.15am on Friday, killing two occupants, police said.

A NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said one person in emotional distress was treated by paramedics.
