Hundreds of mourners have gathered to farewell slain Victorian woman Sarah Cafferkey in her home town of Bacchus Marsh.

Residents of the town, northwest of Melbourne, have decorated shops and a pub with pink balloons in honour of the 22-year-old, who was found dead in a home about 50 kilometres south of her home.

Friends have also gathered along the main street in Bacchus Marsh clutching pink balloons.

The Uniting Church was full of friends and family half-an-hour before the private funeral service began at 2pm AEDT (4pm NZT) today.

Ms Cafferkey's family has requested mourners to consider donating to the White Ribbon association in her memory instead of giving flowers.

A court has heard Ms Cafferkey was stabbed multiple times at a flat in Bacchus Marsh on November 10 before her body was moved to Point Cook in Melbourne's outer southwest.

Police say her body was found in a wheelie bin at the home on November 18.

Steven James Hunter, 47, of Bacchus Marsh, has been charged with the murder while two other men were questioned and released without charge.
