Fourteen people have escaped with just minor injuries after a train crashed into a railway station building in Brisbane's east.

Investigations have begun into why the train failed to stop at the end of the line at Cleveland just after midday.

Ten patients were taken to Redland Hospital for assessment, The Department of Community Safety (DCS) said.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the crash could have been much worse.

"We're very fortunate there haven't been serious injuries," she told the ABC.

"(It must have been) a very scary event for most of the people on the train."

She said the driver was "very much in shock".

The building the train ploughed into was a new station building and had only been completed a few months ago, she said.

Brian Hurst from the Bayside Bulletin newspaper said about 15 metres of the train had smashed into the building.

"About a quarter of the train has gone into the building," he said.
