A gang of masked men armed with a meat cleaver and sword have attacked a mother and son in their Sydney home, police say.

Investigators believe up to six men, all with their faces covered, broke into a home in Mons Avenue, Maroubra about 1.40am (local time) today.

They were armed with a meat cleaver and a sword and confronted a 22-year-old resident when he went to investigate noises. When his mother, 44, came to help him, an altercation broke out.

The men ran from the home empty-handed, but left the mother and son with minor head injuries.

The pair were taken to hospital.
