Australia police are caught in a standoff with a man threatening to blow up himself and his Gold coast house.

The drama began last night when the man called police from a house in Upper  Coomera making threats to harm himself. He was said to be threatening to ignite gas cylinders.

At 7pm (9pm NZT) officers declared an emergency situation, evacuating homes in several streets.

The emergency area was scaled back this morning, but police negotiators were still talking to the man.

He was believed to be alone.
