A man dressed in medieval-style armour is keeping police at bay in a siege-like situation in Australia.

Police have been negotiating with the man, who is armed with a sword, since early this morning.

He is holed up in his caravan in Congupna on the Goulburn Valley Highway, in Victoria's north.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the man was threatening to harm himself.

"We are concerned for his welfare," she said.

"He is dressed in a suit of armour ... more of a medieval style than Ned Kelly.

"Police are negotiating with the man in an attempt to resolve the situation peacefully."
