A body has been found in a house which was extensively damaged by fire at Tuncurry this morning.

Emergency services were called to The Lakes Way shortly before 11am Friday responding to reports of a fire.

Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the blaze and the body was found inside the ruins a short time later. At this time the body has not yet been identified.

The Lakes Way will be closed for some hours and traffic diversions are via Bulahdelah on the Pacific Highway.

A gas explosion is believed to have caused the blast, which has damaged several neighbouring homes. The debris from the home contains asbestos, and has been spread over a 20-30m radius.

The Lakes Way may be blocked up to seven hours between Chapmans Road and the Tuncurry tip, as the debris is cleared. The area has been cordoned off as a crime scene.

The blast, which occurred about 10.45am, seriously damaged nearby homes and smashed windows down the road. The intensity of the blast drew school students out of the senior college, while the noise was heard in Forster.

A fire continues to burn at the site of the explosion, which completely destroyed the home. Fire and Rescue NSW personnel were waiting for an opportunity to search the site for any occupants.
