An Australian lifeguard has been charged after allegedly running over a man and a woman on a Gold Coast beach.

Police say the pair, aged in their 20s, were lying on a beach in Surfers Paradise when a slow-moving lifeguard vehicle ran them over.

Both suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment following the December 23 incident.

Police have charged a 24-year-old Gold Coast man with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

He will appear in Southport Magistrates Court on February 5.

The incident was still being reviewed by Gold Coast City council.
