An Australian man is in hospital after being shot in the leg with a spear gun during a an ill-fated fishing trip at a popular beach in Sydney.

Ambulance and police rushed to Yarra Bay near La Perouse last night following reports of a man being shot in the leg.

They found the victim in agony with a four-barbed spear firmly implanted in his right upper leg.

He said one of his friends had mistaken his leg for the catch of the day.

''My mate thought I was a fish,'' the victim told emergency services.

It could not be established whether the accident occurred in the water, but according to one of his friends, the victim and another man were "mucking around" when the gun went off.

He was treated at the scene and then transported to hospital, with the spear still in his leg. He was in a stable condition.
