An out-of-control and unpredictable bushfire is continuing to threaten homes south of Perth, with flames higher than rooftops.

An emergency warning has been issued for an area in the City of Cockburn.

There is a threat to lives and homes, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) warns.

The fire is burning in heavy swampland, flames are moving west and DFES warns embers are likely to be blown around homes, with spot fires starting ahead of the blaze.

A relocation centre has been set up in Forrestdale, while a watch and act warning is in place.

The cause of the blaze is unknown.
