A 34-year-old woman is in a critical condition after reportedly being set alight in Sydney's CBD.

Emergency services were called to a building on Castlereagh Street about 6.15pm on Friday after receiving reports that a woman had been splashed with an unknown liquid and set on fire.

A 28-year-old man with burns to his arms was found in Ultimo 20 minutes later.

He was taken to hospital where he remains under police guard.
