A woman has been arrested in London in relation to the hit-and-run death of a New Zealander.

The 34-year-old was arrested on August 15 on suspicion of perverting the course of justice in connection with the crash in the early hours of June 1 in West London, getwestlondon.co.uk reported.

She has been bailed to return to a South London police station in September.

Te Awamatu man Karl Robert Jones, 34, had been drinking with friends when the group was involved in an altercation.

Jonesy, as he was known, was taking an injured friend to Charing Cross Hospital when he stumbled into the road and was hit by a car. The driver did not stop.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and a post-mortem examination two days later found he died of a chest injury.

His sister, Karyn Jones, described her brother as a natural athlete harbouring a spirit for life.

"He's very popular. He's got lots of mates that thoroughly enjoyed his energy, worldwide - Australia, London, New Zealand."

A death notice described Jones as a "loyal friend to so many mates, an independent and proud spirit now free to roam".

A 38-year-old man was arrested at the time of his death on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after the car was traced to the address. He was bailed to reappear in mid-September.

Another woman was arrested at the time but was released.
