A British soldier has been killed in an avalanche in southern Germany which also trapped two of his colleagues.
A group of 27 British troops on a week-long backcountry ski training exercise in the Bavarian Alps was surprised by an avalanche, said police spokesman Christian Owsinski.
It struck three of the soldiers at an altitude of 1500 metres when the group was skiing down the Riedbergerhorn mountain.
Two of them were dug out of the snow by their comrades unhurt but a third soldier was later found unconscious.
Paramedics brought in by helicopter later declared him dead.
